The first steel truss of the new Welcome Building in The Devonshire Quarter is now in place.
Over the next six weeks, the remaining ten trusses will be installed, creating the steel frame of the new building that will link the Congress Theatre and provide state-of-the-art conference facilities.
Each 18-metre-long steel truss weighs 11 tonnes and takes 250 hours to be manufactured in Sussex before being transported to Eastbourne on a lorry for installation by a crane that can lift up to 150 tonnes.
Once the steel framework is finished, contractors Vinci Construction UK will begin work on the structure of the building’s upper floors.
