Specialist firm Fineturf is constructing the courts which will bring the total number to 19. These two courts will be seeded this spring and following a year of growth, will be ready for the 2020 international tournament.
Together with the new players’ village, a new show court and state-of-the-art irrigation system, these practice courts make up the package of major improvements delivered in partnership with the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), which has been pivotal in confirming the venue for the flagship event Eastbourne International Tennis until at least 2026.
Councillor David Tutt, Leader of Eastbourne Borough Council, said: “In partnership with the LTA, we have made fantastic improvements to our tennis offer and these two extra courts are the final part of that jigsaw.
“Devonshire Quarter is a world class complex, not only in terms of tennis but also for the conferencing and cultural facilities it will provide for residents and visitors alike to enjoy.”
Scott Lloyd, CEO of the LTA, said: “The redevelopment of Devonshire Park by Eastbourne Borough Council and the LTA will ensure the Nature Valley International remains the destination of choice for both players and fans the week prior to The Championships, Wimbledon.
“At the LTA, our vision is to open up tennis in Britain to anyone with an interest in it, from players of all abilities and backgrounds, to its millions of fans. We are committed to providing the best entertainment experience possible for anyone attending any of our events throughout the year and hopefully attending in person will inspire them either to play or follow tennis more passionately.”
Last year’s Nature Valley Eastbourne International Tennis Tournament hit an all-time record of 51,641 visitors, representing an 8% rise from the previous year.
2018 also broke the record for the biggest daily attendance in the history of the tournament with 7,193 people coming through the gates on Thursday.
Tickets for this year’s tournament are selling fast, and are available from lta.org.uk or by calling 0844 5813015.
